Hello Members and Friends,
May has arrived! – it is that time of year when I only want to breathe in and absorb all those wonderful scents from flowering trees and shrubs. The maples in my area are all leafed out – the cottonwoods are bursting with new leaves; I have cut my grass three times and need to do it today – an early start to the gardening season.
Joan’s funeral was all that she would have wanted it to be. Friends and family gathered to celebrate the woman she was. Her niece, Katherine, and brothers, Al and Bob drove up from the coast – along with two dogs – and stayed in the Granby Inn. Cher, Pam, and I did our best to help Katherine just as Joan would have wanted us to. It was a gorgeous spring day. I noted that Joan’s grave is not far from Rose Gobeil’s – they might have much to talk about. Thanks to Cher for the pictures.

Bob McTavish and his daughter travelled up to Jewel Lake last week and put Frank and Joan’s plaques on the Jewel Lake bench.
Jakki and I also drove up last week to check out Glady’s cabin and see how it fared through the winter. All was well in the cabin. Katherine gave me one of Joan’s red blankets and we put it on the foot of the bed – fits in perfectly and Joan gets to “be” in one of her favourite places.
Jakki did not tell me until we had almost reached the resort turnoff that there had been a fire at Jewel Lake the day before – she did not want to alarm me. There were a truck, trailer and ATV parked close to our fence, and we made the acquaintance of Ryan from Greenwood who was on fire watch. The fire had been in the meadow so not close to the cabin. Ryan was keenly interested in our cabin, so we invited him in – getting him to take the shutters off (smart). It is nice to know that people care about the cabin and realize the value of preserving it. We did not wash the floor or dust as it was a wee bit chilly but, the barrier is off, the bench is in it is place outdoors and another year to look forward to.
Jakki and I checked out the old fence – there is one fence pole either needing replacing or support. It was startling to see that our closest neighbour at the Lake had removed his trailer. We believe he is selling his property but have not seen anything official. Grass cutting will be on Ken Fehr’s and my agenda in a few weeks. The strawberry blossoms were out in full force both at Jewel Lake and the cemetery.
Thanks to Lane Murray we purchased the SSL for our website, and it is now secure. We do not accept credit cards or payment through the site. but the warnings were a bit frightening. If you get a chance to take a look and have any suggestions we would love to hear from you – boundaryhistory.com. The renewal was successful, next is our domain name and then we should not have to be concerned for a couple of months.
We are still working on stories for our next report. There is a wealth of information and stories at the Boundary Museum Archives – Kelsey Ehler is in charge of them. Kelsey is keen and we were happy to have her join us at our April meeting.
We will be up at the Boundary Museum on Saturday, May 30th. Denise Frocklage invited us to attend their inaugural Honey Bee Festival at the Boundary Museum. It will be our first “fair” for the year. Jakki is figuring out the instructions for using the Square for sales, but cash will always be welcome. Signed us up for the Rock Creek Fair already.
Chatted with James Price from the Brown Creek Community yesterday. We are planning a “history” day in July – potluck and sharing of our favourite antiques – sounds like fun. I will keep you posted.
The BIG news is that Mickey was successful with her grant-in-aid request to the RDKB and we have been awarded $3000.00 for repairs and maintenance at Phoenix Cemetery. We have thanked our RDKB Director, Linda Kay Wiese, for her support and we will do some preliminary planning at our next meeting. Jakki and I swung by there on our drive – the back gate was open and there are a great many baby pine trees popping up but we are hoping to get up there to clear out branches (and baby pines), and we need to flag where we’d like the new picket cradles to be placed. If you would like to help with this cursory clean up let us know – we can always use helping hands. Jesse has offered his services again this year for the trimming – we feel ever so lucky to have him helping us.
Our next regular meeting is on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 at 1 pm in the Woodworker’s building You are always welcome to attend our meetings.
