Hello Members and Friends,

We held our regular meeting a week late because I needed to go to Lethbridge, so we met on Wednesday, August 26th. We discussed re-setting a date in September for our Annual Picnic but came to a decision to not hold a picnic this year simply because the fire danger is not over.  We are considering moving our Picnic back to a date in June – we used to always have it in June but often we were rained out.  We do have a cabin now so if that happens, we could all crowd in there and stay dry!!  I will let you know what date we decide on. Maureen Grant was to be our guest speaker and hoping we can call on her next year. Hope many of you have joined her on her Greenwood tours.  They are amazing.

We have signed up as members of the Jewel Creek Environmental Protection Society. Mickey was able to attend the AGM.  Right now, the focus is on fire protection. Earlier this spring,  Jakki and I drove up to Jewel Lake to take the barrier off the door and we met a gentleman who was watching the back field because a fire had been started. Glad to know there are people keeping watch.

I attended the Greenwood Gold Rush Car Show on August 15th  and was happy to talk history with a lot of people.  Met quite a few people from Osoyoos – they were escaping the smoke in their area.  We just made it through the afternoon before the smoke rolled back in. As I came down Spencer it was thick and heavy but the next day it cleared some.  Took in just over $200.00, signed up a new member and resigned a former one.  Our membership stands at 119 plus 4 Life Members for a total of 123.

We have a crew of BHS directors taking on our table at the Grand Forks & District Fall Fair on September 12 & 13, 2026.  Thanks to our Past Vice-President, Cher Wyers, for supervising.  Drop by and have a chat and renew your membership if it is due.

We will be at the Rock Creek Fall Fair on September 19 & 20th.  I am sure we will still be in the pavilion – always nice to chat.

Jakki encountered a few problems with getting the new head markers engraved for Phoenix Cemetery but those talented guys at the Boundary Woodworkers Guild came to our rescue and are once again helping us out.  The larch head markers will be hand carved. Jakki and Tony will attach the metal supports and Jakki will put a preservative on them. If necessary, she may make the letters darker so they can be read easily. We are incredibly grateful to Jakki and Tony for taking on this task. The head markers were one of Frank Talarico’s cherished projects, and I am sure he would be so happy to know it is getting done.  We will be giving a donation to the Woodworkers to say a big “thanks.”

I was not able to attend the Japanese Internees reunion on August 22nd, but Yoko Nishi kindly left the books for us at the Boundary Museum.  We ordered 10 of them and 6 of them have been sold.  If any of you want one – it is first-come, first served.  There will not be a reprint.  Cost is $35.00 plus shipping if I need to mail it away.  The book is both in Japanese and English and is definitely a treasure.  We have kept one for the Society and placed it in our own archives.  I know Boundary Museum purchased 5 copies, and I am assuming one is going into their archives.  The Grand Forks Library also purchased a copy, but I am not sure if it will be circulated. We are trying to arrange a small work party at Phoenix Cemetery on Friday, September 4th to install the supports on the I.O.O.F. fence.  We’ll meet at the Woodworkers Guild at 8 a.m. and travel up together.  Let me know if you can help. 

Our next regular meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 16th – 1:00 pm in the Boundary Woodworkers Guild meeting room.
