Hello Members and Friends,
September has been a very busy month for us. I’m just trying to get caught up with everything. Today, Jo Ann and I are doing inventory.
We have sold all of Yoko’s Japanese Internment book – thanks to our members who reached out. I believe the Boundary Museum may have a few copies left but not sure. Definitely a collector’s item. Thanks, Yoko, for allowing us to have these copies.
Sad news has struck us again – our Report #19 designer, Brian McAndrew, passed away a week or so ago. Big shock to me and I believe a shock also to the community. He did our local tourist map, the ATV Club’s signage, business cards, and signs – he was a talented man who gave much back to his community and will be deeply missed. I am trying to find someone else to work with. I do not believe Brian had made big inroads on our Report but everything I sent him is still on my computer.
A good weekend for us at the Grand Forks and District Fall Fair. Thanks to our directors who volunteered. I know you chatted history with many, many people. We took in $289.73 – odd numbers are because of using our Square for payment. While the Fair’s outside activities got rained out on Sunday, the Exhibit Hall was open for business. The Rock Creek Fall Fair took place a week later. Mel and Joan offered me a break on Saturday and Mickey was my partner on Sunday. Sold a set of books on Saturday!! Our take was $735.75 – a great weekend for us.
Before I forget (again) we want to thank Rolf Heiberg from Borderline Lumber for going above and beyond to get us the larch for the markers. He travelled far for it and all he charged for was the actual log. We sent him a thank you card but wanted all our members to know about his donation. The Boundary Woodworkers’ Guild has finished with the markers and Jakki and Tony are working on the metal supports. Jakki is not going to stain the engraved letters – they show up perfectly without added colour. Jakki is using a preservative on the wood. Big thanks to John Walders and Dick Jones for the engraving. These head markers are heavy – cannot wait to see them in place. Thanks to all the Woodworkers for their help with this project.

Good news is that the Boundary Woodworkers have come to an agreement with the RDKB re rental of the building housing the Woodworkers, Fibre Arts, and our reports. We will be under the umbrella of the Boundary Woodworkers’ Guild. We do have to talk about insurance as the RDKB must be added to our policy as an additional insured.
Mary Lautard helped me get Ed Brouwer’s information. Ed is the minister for the Bridesville Community. We have been admiring the Bridesville cookbook for a few years. It is a mix of history and recipes, and we were hoping to be able to obtain the rights to reprint it. However, the Bridesville Community is considering reprinting it themselves – they are in the market for a new roof. Wished them luck – mentioned I would sure like a copy and the door is not shut tight.
I have signed us up for four Christmas Craft Fairs. The first at Brown Creek is on Saturday, November 7th. GFSS and Greenwood fall on the same day, November 28th. Jakki and Tony have offered to take care of GFSS, and I will travel to Greenwood. I have said we would like to attend the Rock Creek on December 5th but have not received the forms yet. I will look into that.
Joe Barrett went up last Sunday to repair the fences at the cemeteries at Phoenix. He found that the cost is going to be a lot less than we were prepared for. He was able to “fix” some of it. I have asked him to replace this piece that is all bunched up. Here is a picture of the fence we still want replaced. Take a drive by and enjoy the beautiful fall scenery and take a wander around the cemetery. I need to go up and get the visitor’s lists and add some more. Almost time to put the barrier on Glady’s cabin, too.

We have a regular meeting in October – on Wednesday, October 21st at 1:00 p.m. at the Woodworkers Guild. We have scheduled our AGM for Sunday, October 25, 2026 from 1 – 3 pm at Sacred Heart Church. We loved how warm it was there last year and believe that Frank Talarico would thoroughly approve of our meeting place. I will send another note around before the AGM. 1 – 1:30 is membership renewal time and refreshments. Our AGM is scheduled to begin at 1:30. Hope to see lots of you out for this meeting. The refreshments are always in good supply and pretty delicious!!
We’ve also all been invited to attend the Grand Forks & District Public Library’s 80th birthday party on Friday, October 16th from 11 – 1 pm. Kelsey Ehler, Archivist, will be making a presentation at 12 noon. Come on out and celebrate our beautiful library – refreshments will be available.
If I have forgotten something, I will catch up next newsletter.
