Hello Members and Friends,

October has come and gone – what a beautiful Fall we have been experiencing. Jo Ann and I drove up to Jewel Lake on our way back from Kelowna and popped Al and Les’ bench into the cabin and put the barrier on for winter. It was really unusual to not see a golden path of tamarack needles on the road. Some of the tamaracks were still partially green. Going over to Trail last week to pick up a reprint of Al’s “Heritage Comes Alive” the tamarack and even the poplars were holding onto their needles and leaves – so gorgeous!!

We held our October meeting at the Woodworkers’ Guild. I saw Bob McTavish at the post office just before I was going to pick up Jo Ann for the meeting. He made sure I had my key for the building. Bob looked healthy and happy. He’s had his heart surgery and came through with flying colours and now just needs a CT scan. The directors who needed to renew their memberships did so at the meeting as we were heading to our AGM in a couple of days.

Sunday, October 19th saw us meeting at Sacred Heart Parish Hall for our AGM. It was perfect for us – warm and welcoming. Frank and his son, Corey, and daughter, Tammy were waiting for us. Gosh it was good to see Frank. We are ever so sorry to lose him as a Director. He’s made a difference with the BHS, and we’ve benefited from his work ethic and enthusiasm for history.

Our AGM was prefaced with refreshments and coffee. Deb and John Billwiller had to leave early to meet a plane, so we moved the presentation of their Life Member Award forward to accommodate their schedule. Mickey Keller-Nadon presented them with a certificate. John and Deb were instrumental in keeping the Boundary Historical Society together and are always stalwart supporters. Deb has been a mentor to me and John has always been there for us.

It has been a time of change in the Boundary Historical Society. Joan Heart let us know that she was stepping down from the position of President due to ongoing health concerns. Joan has served ably and enthusiastically for many years – stepping up after Les Johnson stepped down. Joan is eager to be involved in her position as Past President. Mickey Keller-Nadon read Joan’s report and thanked her for her many years of service. Cher Wyers conducted our election, and we are fortunate to have another complete board of directors:

President: Mickey Keller-Nadon

Past-President: Joan Heart

Vice-President: Jakki Fryers

Treasurer: Jo Ann Sergeant

Secretary: Doreen Sorensen

Directors: Irene Perepolkin and Bob McTavish

(Both Joan and Irene are missing from the picture because of ill health)

Ken Fehr and Tony Fryer put their names forward following the meeting for the positions of Area Directors. They will both be named Directors at our November meeting.

Lorraine Van Boyen and I resumed our attempts to gain access to our Boundary Historical Society website that Les Johnson administered. The website was actually suspended before we were able to convince GoDaddy that we had a right to it!! Actually, Lorraine is now giving us access. Finally, I was allowed to pay and voila the site was back up. We’ve sought some advice from Lane Murray – we are taking a bit of time before we try to make any changes. Mickey has access and is able to post and clear off spam for sure. They still say “Hi, Les” when we log on but that’s okay. It’s not like Les and Al are far from our thoughts.

Barry Noll and Al from the Artisan’s Market in Greenwood will work on engraving the wooden markers for Phoenix this winter. Jakki has offered to darken the engraving to make it easily readable and she’s bought the preservative for the wood. Frank would have liked to see this project through to completion – he donated all the wood, and it is beautiful.

Emailed Chris Trudeau again – he is the lawyer for Gladys’ estate – still no progress with the CRA. Will be a huge and welcome surprise when it comes through.

I attended the Brown Creek Community Christmas Craft Fair yesterday. A lovely day. Sold $$209.50 worth of Reports and signed up two new members. We have the GFSS Craft Fair coming up on November 29th – Jakki and Tony are taking care of it as I’ll be heading to Greenwood for their Christmas Craft Fait that day. Rock Creek is on December 6th. I’m busy restocking our supplies for the fairs. Those Reports are heavy!!

Our last meeting for 2025 will be held on Wednesday, November 19th 1:00 pm in the Boundary Woodworker’s Guild. Members are always most welcome to attend.

We take a brief break in December – no meeting, anyway. Our first meeting in 2026 will be on January 21st.

In History,

Doreen Sorensen
