December 4, 2016

Hello to all our Members, Life Members and Friends of the Boundary Historical Society;

The last newsletter for 2016.  2017 is approaching quickly along with Canada’s 150th birthday!  What a young country with such a lot of history and I believe we in the Boundary Historical Society are very lucky as we still have family members alive who can recount the stories of their parents or grandparents coming to this area.

Laura Lodder is still hard at work assembling articles to record in Report #17.  We’ve had many great submissions and our next report will be published in 2017.

Les’ WordPress Workshop

Our President, Les Johnson, continues to teach members how to use WordPress to post articles to our website at boundaryhistory.com.  I always find the old papers particularly interesting.  We are linked to many other sites now so perhaps we’ll hear from more families about their history in the Boundary.  If any of you have ideas for our website, please feel free to give us a call or send an email.

We rejoiced in receiving a Grant-in-Aid from Roly Russell, our Area D Regional District representative to aid us in doing maintenance at the Phoenix Cemetery.  Roly’s donation was $2000.00.  I’ve been in touch with Area E’s representative, Vicky Gee, and she has also promised us $2000.00 for the upkeep of the Cemetery.  We haven’t received the money as of today’s date but do know it will be coming.  Les approached the Woodworker’s Guild and they are willing to do the pickets for the graves for us.  We need to get a sample from each grave with a picket fence so they can be replaced in the original style.  It will be a big job for us and we will need a lot of help.  Al Donnelly has reminded us to ask for help from the Greenwood Heritage Society also and I know their help will be invaluable.

Doreen and Randi at Artisan’s Faire

We’ve attended two local Christmas fairs offering our Reports for sale and that has been quite successful. We’ve also added new members to our Society.  Next year, we are hoping to attend more craft fairs, especially in the west end of the Boundary so we can expand our efforts in getting our Reports out to the public.  Apart from the sale of Reports and memberships the public relations are valuable – it is enjoyable to “talk” history with others – to hear their stories and even to urge them to submit their story to us for publication.  People often come up with questions that we don’t know the answer to but we are willing to try to find the answer and that pleases them.  So many stories, so little time!!

We won’t have another Board meeting until January as we “skip” December. We have set a date for our Anniversary Luncheon – February 18, 2017 at the Senior Citizens’ Hall in Grand Forks City Park.  Mark it on your calendar.  It is a good time to get together and reminisce as well as enjoy a tasty lunch.

In closing, I would just like to extend to all of you the best wishes of the Board for a Merry Christmas and a very happy and healthy 2017!

Happy Holidays,
